The Oklahoma City Thunder celebrated their first NBA championship by raising a banner and receiving their championship rings on Tuesday night (October 21) at the Paycom Center. The Thunder defeated the Indiana Pacers in the NBA Finals last season, marking their first title since relocating from Seattle in 2008. The team had an impressive 68-14 regular season, securing homecourt advantage throughout the playoffs.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver presented the rings, which were designed by Jostens and feature over 800 gemstones set in 14-karat gold. The rings showcase the letters "OKC" in diamonds atop the team's shield, surrounded by blue sapphires. Each ring also includes a tribute to the Oklahoma City National Memorial.
League MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who played a pivotal role in the Thunder's championship run, received enthusiastic "M-V-P" chants as he accepted his ring. He was the last player to receive his ring, following Thunder chairman Clay Bennett and team president Sam Presti.
In addition to the celebration, the Thunder opened their season with a thrilling 125-124 double-overtime victory against the Houston Rockets. Gilgeous-Alexander scored 35 points, including the game-winning free throws with just 2.3 seconds left. Former Thunder star Kevin Durant, now with the Rockets, scored 23 points but was unable to secure a win for his new team.
The Thunder's championship team remains largely intact, with key players like Gilgeous-Alexander, Jalen Williams, and Chet Holmgren returning after signing extensions. The team is considered a favorite to contend for the title again this season.
