Cody A. Balmer, 38, pleaded guilty on Tuesday (October 14) to several charges, including attempted murder and arson, in connection with the April attack on Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro's residence. The Dauphin County District Attorney's Office confirmed that Balmer was sentenced to 25 to 50 years in state prison under a plea deal.
Balmer admitted to scaling a security fence and using Molotov cocktails to set fire to the governor's mansion in Harrisburg. The attack occurred just hours after a Passover Seder at the residence. Governor Shapiro, his family, and guests were safely evacuated, and no injuries were reported. The fire caused millions of dollars in damage to the historic building, which lacked sprinklers.
Balmer's actions were motivated by his opposition to Shapiro's views on the war in Gaza. In a letter from jail, Balmer denied that Shapiro's Jewish faith influenced his decision. He turned himself in to authorities the day after the attack, admitting to harboring hatred toward the governor.
Balmer's mother revealed that she had sought mental health assistance for him without success. Court proceedings were delayed while Balmer received mental health treatment. The residence is undergoing repairs and security upgrades following the incident.
Balmer will not be eligible for parole until April 13, 2050.
