Oklahoma leaders are reacting to the assassination of Charlie Kirk.
Oklahoma U.S. Senator Markwayne Mullin said, Kirk wasn’t just a great friend to him, but also a friend to his family. "This loss hurts. May God be with the Kirk family, his wife Erika and their two young children, and all who loved him," said Kirk.
Oklahoma U.S. Senator James Lankford said the news was "devastating and heartbreaking." "Cindy and I are praying for his wife Erika, their two children, and all those who serve at Turning Point," said Lankford.
Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt has ordered all flags in Oklahoma to half-staff to honor Kirk. "Charlie’s memory, that of a tireless champion for freedom, shall never die," said Stitt.
Utah's governor says police have a person-of-interest in custody for the shooting. Governor Spencer Cox made the announcement while giving an emotional plea about ending political violence in the U.S. The conservative activist was murdered during an outdoor "Turning Point" rally at Utah Valley University near Provo.
Kirk was shot while speaking to hundreds of students. Police earlier arrested a man at the event they believed could have been the shooter, but later determined he was not.
