The Oklahoma Sooners triumphed over the Michigan Wolverines with a 24-13 victory on Saturday night (September 6) in Norman, Oklahoma. Quarterback John Mateer led the Sooners with a standout performance, running for two touchdowns and passing for another. Mateer, a transfer from Washington State, accumulated 270 passing yards and 74 rushing yards, contributing significantly to Oklahoma's win.
The Sooners' defense, orchestrated by coach Brent Venables, was instrumental in the victory, limiting the Wolverines to 288 total yards. Michigan's freshman quarterback, Bryce Underwood, struggled in his first challenging environment, completing only nine of 24 passes for 142 yards. Justice Haynes, a standout for Michigan, ran for 125 yards, including a 75-yard touchdown that cut Oklahoma's lead to 14-7 early in the second half.
Oklahoma's defense consistently pressured Underwood, and the Sooners capitalized on their opportunities. Deion Burks was a key target for Mateer, catching seven passes for 101 yards. The game marked the second meeting between these historic programs, with Michigan leading in all-time wins and Oklahoma having the most victories since World War II.
Despite some self-inflicted errors, the Sooners controlled the game, especially in the fourth quarter, with a 16-play, 78-yard drive that ended in a field goal by Tate Sandell, extending their lead to 24-13. Oklahoma's coach Brent Venables praised his team's toughness and mindset, emphasizing the importance of the players' contributions to the win. Michigan coach Sherrone Moore, returning to Oklahoma where he once played, acknowledged the significance of the players in the game.
Looking ahead, Oklahoma will travel to face Temple. The Sooners are expected to rise in the polls following this victory.
