Oklahoma State Superintendent Ryan Walters is asking the State Supreme Court to lift a temporary order blocking the purchase of Bibles and Bible-based curriculum for public schools. The court issued the stay in March, pausing efforts by the State Department of Education to seek suppliers for the materials. Walters argues the Bible is essential for understanding U.S. history and accuses opponents of trying to erase Christianity from schools. Critics say his move threatens religious freedom and violates the separation of church and state. The court has not yet ruled on Walters' request.
