A new conservative online private school called American Virtual Academy is launching in Oklahoma with support from State Superintendent Ryan Walters. Walters says the school offers a patriotic alternative to what he calls political activism in classrooms. He also wants the academy to qualify for the state's Parental Choice Tax Credit Program, which gives families financial help for enrolling. Some lawmakers are questioning why a public schools chief is backing a private institution. The school is already certified in eight other states.
