The Tulsa City Council has approved a new curfew for downtown Tulsa, aiming to enhance public safety in response to recent gun violence. The curfew, which was passed on Wednesday (June 25), applies to individuals under the age of 18 and will be enforced from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. daily. This measure is part of a broader initiative to curb youth violence and improve safety in the downtown area.
According to city officials, the curfew aligns with existing citywide regulations and allows exceptions for work and other approved activities. The curfew will take effect as soon as Thursday (June 26) following the mayor's signature.
Mayor Nichols emphasized the importance of these measures, stating, "Today’s announcement ensures that aggressive steps are being taken to curb violence amongst our youth." The Tulsa Police Department (TPD) will form a dedicated Downtown Curfew Team to enforce the ordinance, ensuring minors are not present downtown during restricted hours.
In addition to the curfew, the city is launching a Gun Violence Task Force to address the root causes of gun violence and remove illegal firearms from the streets. Tulsa has also received a nearly $2 million grant from the U.S. Department of Justice to further combat gun-related crimes.
Officials say the curfew and accompanying measures reflect a collaborative effort between city leaders, law enforcement, and community partners to make downtown Tulsa a safer place for residents and visitors alike.
