Tulsa Acting Legend Gailard Sartain Dies at 78

Gailard Sartain, a beloved character actor known for his roles on 'Hee Haw' and in films like 'The Buddy Holly Story,' died on Tuesday (June 17) at the age of 78. His death, following a long illness, was announced by The Church Studio in Tulsa, where his wife, Mary Jo, volunteers.

Born on September 18, 1946, in Tulsa, Sartain began his career as a cameraman at a local TV station. He gained popularity with his late-night show, 'The Uncanny Film Festival and Camp Meeting,' where he performed as Dr. Mazeppa Pompazoidi. This led to his national breakthrough on the country variety show 'Hee Haw,' where he remained for 20 years, playing characters like Orville the cook and Maynard the clerk.

Sartain's film career was extensive, with roles in 'The Buddy Holly Story' as The Big Bopper, 'Mississippi Burning,' 'Fried Green Tomatoes,' and several 'Ernest' movies. He also appeared in 'The Outsiders,' 'The Grifters,' and 'The Hollywood Knights,' among others. His versatility allowed him to transition from comedic to dramatic roles, marking a significant career milestone with his portrayal of a sheriff in 'Mississippi Burning.'

In addition to acting, Sartain was an accomplished illustrator, creating the cover for Leon Russell's 1975 album 'Will O’ the Wisp.' Sartain is survived by his wife, Mary Jo, their children, Sarah, Esther, and Ben, granddaughter Chloe, and great-grandson Teddy.
