The Edmond Police Department has released bodycam footage of an incident in which Officer Caleb Hodam was stabbed during a traffic stop on May 1. The footage shows 22-year-old Ocean Hudson approaching Officer Hodam near East 15th Street and South Broadway in Edmond, and spraying him with pepper spray before attacking him with a large knife.
Officer Hodam, who was conducting a routine traffic stop, called for backup as blood dripped down his forehead. A passerby intervened to assist the officer, helping to disarm Hudson. Despite being injured, Officer Hodam managed to subdue Hudson with a taser until additional officers arrived on the scene.
Hudson, who was due in court the day of the attack for charges related to lewd acts with a child and possession of child pornography, now faces multiple charges, including aggravated assault and battery on a police officer. Officer Hodam was taken to the hospital for surgery and has since been released and is recovering.
The Edmond Police Department released the footage to provide transparency about the incident. Edmond Police Chief J.D. Younger emphasized the bravery of Officer Hodam and the assisting bystander. The footage serves as a reminder of the dangers officers face in the line of duty.
