The Oklahoma Attorney General's Office is alerting residents about the risk of contractor scams following recent wildfires across the state. These scams often target vulnerable homeowners eager to repair damage quickly. Attorney General Gentner Drummond emphasized the importance of selecting reputable contractors to protect oneself and property.
According to the Attorney General's Office, the number of contractor fraud incidents tends to increase after severe weather events. Residents are urged to verify contractor credentials with the Better Business Bureau (BBB) before agreeing to any repairs. The BBB tracks vetted contractors and warns against those using high-pressure sales tactics or demanding large upfront payments.
Additionally, common scams include fake charities, phishing attempts, and impersonation of aid workers. Residents should verify identities and be cautious of unsolicited requests for personal information or money.
The Better Business Bureau of Central Oklahoma advises getting multiple estimates in writing to compare offers and avoid scams. Homeowners are encouraged to report any suspicious activity to the BBB or the Federal Trade Commission to help protect others.
Residents should also be aware of hidden hot spots in debris that could cause injuries. Anyone suspecting fraud can contact the Attorney General's Consumer Protection Unit at 1-833-681-1895.
