The US Supreme Court is ordering a new trial for Oklahoma death row inmate Richard Glossip. Glossip was convicted of hiring another man to kill his boss, hotel owner Barry Van Treese, in 1997. On a 5 to 3 vote, the court announced this morning a new trial is needed because the prosecution violated its obligation to correct false testimony. The man who carried out the murder, Justin Sneed, struck a deal to avoid the death penalty in exchange for testifying against Glossip. But his testimony has since been called into question, and State Attorney General Gentner Drummond argued for a new trial for Glossip.
Oklahoma County District Attorney Vicki Behenna says she has spoken with Attorney General Drummond regarding today's decision. She says she will review the entire opinion and then will discuss 'next steps' together with the Attorney General.
