Oklahoma State Superintendent Ryan Walters is facing opposition from members of his own party. 17 Republican lawmakers have sent a letter to the Oklahoma Speaker of the House asking for an investigation into Walters. The letter from State Representative Mark McBride notes that there are recent actions by Walters that are alarming including preventing members of the education committee from getting access to executive sessions at State Board of Education meetings and failure to respond to requests for open records.

State House Speaker Charles McCall says unless 51 or more Republicans sign the letter, he will not consider the request. McCall says anyone who was duly elected by the people of this state should not be removed from office unless absolutely required by the Constitution.

Meanwhile, Superintendent Walters says calls for an investigation into his actions in office are baseless, have no merit and reek of political desperation.
