The Oklahoma Supreme Court has issued a ruling in a legal battle between the Oklahoma State Department of Education and Edmond Public Schools.

The court ruled the department does not have authority to decide which books public schools can have in their libraries.

The Edmond School District had challenged an order by the department to remove "The Kite Runner" and "The Glass Castle" from its school libraries or risk losing accreditation.

State School Superintendent Ryan Walters had said the books contained sexualized content.

The Supreme Court ruled the decision over which books can be in school libraries rests with individual school districts and not the state.
