Leaders from throughout the Tulsa region have signed an agreement to build a new dam in South Tulsa and Jenks in the Arkansas River that will form a lake stretching from 71st to 101st streets. The leaders gathered at the Jenks Riverwalk to sign the agreement.
The project is planned to begin survey, design, and engineering efforts between early 2024 through late 2025, with construction beginning in mid-2025 and a scheduled completion date expected by mid-2027.
The Muscogee Creek National Council approved the agreement with the City of Tulsa, The City of Jenks, and INGOG.
The plan is for a lake to stretch from 71st to 101st. In addition to the lake, the project will include a marina and a trail system.
"There's a lot of history here in Oklahoma with Native tribes, 39 tribes here, we want to draw tourism here." Principal Chief David W. Hill with the Muscogee Creek Nation said..
"Thanks to this historic, regional collaboration, we're going to make it happen," Mayor G.T. Bynum with the City of Tulsa said.
The overall cost of the project is $96 million, with the city of Tulsa putting up $64 million, Jenks contributing $16 million, and the Muscogee Creek Nation making $8 million available.
